As GPS technology is adapted for earthmoving equipment, grade stakes are quickly becoming obsolete. Onboard computers loaded with three-dimensional project models teamed with receivers which pick up satellite signals allow fast, accurate excavation without the tedious staking previously required. For many machines, blade control offers grading tolerances to within one tenth of a foot automatically.

Edgerton Contractors, Inc. has embraced this new technology since 2002. GPS is now utilized on most projects undertaken. A variety of equipment is now outfitted with GPS systems including dozers, motor graders and hydraulic excavators.

Beside typical applications like grading building pads, highways and landfills, innovation by Edgerton personnel has led to GPS utilization for nontraditional applications like construction of stone revetments along Lake Michigan shoreline, excavation for building footings, and excavation underwater without the need for manual grade verification.
